Sicily is the largest region of Italy, which for centuries has witnessed the domination of foreign states. As a result - the richest culture, a variety of traditions and customs, and therefore a wedding for every taste! To get married in Sicily is an opportunity to choose from all the scenarios that nature offers: rocks and seascapes, mountains covered with various colors, and of course the great Etna! One of the latest trends is a wedding on a yacht or on the beach, and in this sense there are hardly any competitors on the island either. Look at least on the Aeolian Islands!
Or, for example, get married in the famous Taormina, in the romantic Savoka, which became famous after the film “The Godfather”, or in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, surrounded by citrus scents ... volcano Etna. Sicily offers so many alternatives!

Wedding in Sicily

The key to understanding Sicily is tradition!

The traditions and customs that are passed down from generation to generation in Sicily are unparalleled, because deeply honored on this earth and in our modern time. Wedding day is a unique day, including to gather around you many relatives and friends.

Earlier in Sicily, as in many other places, they were married much earlier, at about 18 years of age. Most of the women before marriage were always under the supervision of the family, older brothers and sisters and parents, most often they were at home, where they were engaged in any craft. Many girls dreamed of getting rid of such a conclusion and supervision as soon as possible, and therefore were looking forward to finally meet their prince. In order to quickly fulfill their desire and find out what the future husband would be, they did various ceremonies: they put three beans under the pillow, one peeled, one in the peel and one half peeled. Waking up, the future bride got at random one of the beans. In the peel - meant that she would marry a rich man, half-purified - of the middle class, and completely without the peel - poor.

In order to ask for the hand of her future bride, the young man came to her father, and after reaching an agreement with her mother, a whole list of the dowry was made, which she had to give to her daughter. During the week this dowry was exhibited in the house so that all relatives could admire it. There is still a custom, when relatives and friends come to visit some time before the wedding and all together arrange a real holiday: with songs, dances and music, a photo session, and then dinner, they collect the bride and her things for future family life. And if the parents were against the wedding of a young couple, the lovers made an escape and friends usually helped them with this.

Another tradition in Sicily is the preparation of the bed for the newlyweds. A few days before the wedding, friends and sisters of the bride, among whom an unmarried girl must be, come to the spouses' house to make the bed, usually with a set and linen or silk cover. The bed should be covered by an unmarried girl under supervision, as a rule, to a mother, a woman who conveys wisdom and experience. And between the sheets put money, confetti, grains and rice - symbols of wealth and joy.

After the date of the wedding is chosen, all expenses are evenly divided between the parents of the bride and the future husband: the bride’s family buys the bedroom and living room, everything necessary for the kitchen, the wedding dress and invitations from the bride. For the future husband-house, part of the wedding expenses: a photographer, a florist and a honeymoon trip.
In Sicily, it is also considered a bad omen if the groom sees the wedding dress before the wedding and is usually kept with relatives or friends who deliver it on their wedding day and help the bride get dressed.

There are two wedding bouquets for the bride: one gift from parents for making, a photo session in the house of the bride, and the second for a wedding as a gift from the groom.
In Sicily, the bridegroom is waiting for the bride not at the altar, but in the center of the aisle. The future husband enters the church shortly before the bride arrives, accompanied by both parents. Soon after, the bride comes, under the arm of the father and next to the mother. Two families meet in the middle of the aisle, the groom kisses the bride on the forehead, gives her a bouquet, and all together go to the altar.
At the exit from the church, newlyweds throw rice, rose petals, and then luxury cars, decorated with balloons, arrive.
After the celebration, the newlyweds escorted guests, standing at a large table with gifts. In Sicily, it is customary to give gifts not only to the husband and wife, but also to their guests.
