Wedding cookie group sets date for second cookie college

Looking to dust up on your cookie-making skills before the wedding season this summer? Or have questions about how many cookies are needed for a cookie table? Or how far in advance they have to be made?

The Wedding Cookie Community has got your back, along with some recipes, baking tips and a chance to meet fellow bakers they only know online.

The Facebook group of cookie lovers, started in 2015 by Monongahela native Laura Magone, is holding its second cookie college on May 5. It runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh — Meadowlands in Washington, Pa. Registration begins at noon.

People can either attend in person, or sign up to live stream the presentation that day. One does not need to be a member of the FB group to participate.

In addition to exchanging recipes, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase cookies and other products, see demos and visit vendor stations.

Tickets cost $25 per person and can be purchased at the Wedding Cookie College site. Checks can be sent to the Monongahela Area Historical Society at 826 Lawrence St., Monongahela, PA 15063. Proceeds benefit MAHS for a future wedding cookie event.

The hotel restaurant will be open for lunch before the session. If you want to make a weekend of it, The DoubleTree — located next to Meadows Casino — is offering rooms for $109. You will need to call the hotel directly 724-222-6200 by April 9 and use the code WCC.

The Wedding Cookie Community counted just a few hundred followers when it launched three years ago. It now has almost 15,000 members worldwide, some of whom were alerted to the site after what Ms. Magone refers to as “the Kiss Felt Around The World.” Last December, members took The Hershey Company to task after they noticed it was cutting the tips off its iconic Kisses in the weeks leading up to the busy holiday baking season.  And they kept the pressure on until the candy maker — nearly two months later — admitted there was a manufacturing issue  and promised to fix it.
